Creature - 2013
On Saturday, the 11th of May, I attended day one of Erinswindow’s under the winter sky Workshop at Paper Boat Press. Erin’s exhibition of her beautiful hand-formed porcelain pieces had its opening night on Friday and the exhibition will be running until the 25th of May.
Firstly I’d like to share the main idea we played with for this workshop:
Porcelain slab vessel = some quality in paper + clay body
At the beginning of the workshop we explored the differences and similarities between paper and clay, which was really beautiful. It really sparked some very powerful ideas within me for projects I’d love to work on in the near future.
Before committing to the clay form, we explored different shapes by constructing paper vessels. I loved how Erin described how she sees and interacts with the notion of the vessel. Here are some notes I took down on this:
intimate part of our lives
a great beauty
a journal, a statement of intimacy all in the mind
openness
inside // outside
an enclosed space
a sanctuary
Erin makes some beautiful vases and mugs, that all have a very natural feel to them. When working with my clay vessel I initially had my walls very rigid, but as I was working and feeling the clay with my fingers, I was pulled towards creating a softer, more organic structure. Curves. Curves. Curves.
Working on creating the spoon was the next stage. I attempted to make a small spoon (quite similar to Erin’s work) at first, but as the clay was so wet it was difficult to manipulate into the shape I wanted. I then started thinking about different sorts of spoons, following my inner feelings in creating a shape that I felt drawn to.
In between waiting for the clay to dry slightly I started playing with some of the scraps of clay, which quickly escalated into me creating the face of a mouse. Erin makes beautiful dogs and birds and these forms really inspired me to attempt to create some creatures of my own. The face of the mouse was initially meant to be attached to the end of the spoon’s handle, but I wasn’t brave enough to attempt this, as the clay was too wet and I didn’t want to risk ruining either as time was running out. I quite like the other little mouse, too, I hope she will be happy in her little vessel home. It wasn’t until after I created her that I realised it may make a lovely little home for her. I shall have to wait and see how this plays out.
I am feeling quite nervous at how everything is drying, particularly the spoon, as it was very wet when I left it, and I hope to glaze both sides of the ‘spoon’ end - so it must be raised above the level of the handle. I know that everything will look quite different once painted, so I am looking forward to doing that in a few days time. Then, once these pieces get fired, they will transform yet again.
You never really know what the end result will be with clay. What a beautiful form of art it is to work with.

Mice - 2013
War - 2013
In a lecture the other week were supposed to write our reflection on how Design has caused war. I didn’t want to think about sad things so I just wrote the word ‘war’ over and over again.

Here’s some (bad quality phone) photos of some of the progress I made at the workshop I did last weekend. On Saturday we have the second half of the workshop and get to clean up and paint our pieces. We got to make a ‘vessel’ and a spoon. I also made a mouse and a mouse face. I really like mice okay? Okay.

Giveaway ends on JUNE 1st, GO!!(I have lots of schoolwork and a comic sort of commission I’m working on right now, so the portraits will be done after all of this is sorted!)
Hi everyone!!! This is an art supplies giveaway for me reaching an amount of followers I said I’d do a giveaway at!
Here are the things you’ll be getting, as you can see from the photo!
- 6” by 10” Sketchbook for both wet and dry media
- A bottle of ink, you pick the color, I’ll order it from a specific site
- A fountain pen that comes with the ink from the same site
- 11 colors of Cotman Winsor & Newton watercolors
- 3 brushes
- A drawing of a subject of your choice to go on the first page! You might want to check my art out if you’re unfamiliar with me to see what types of things I usually do
And that’s that. I don’t use any of those watercolor tubes anymore, as I’ve replaced them each with higher quality tubes, so I thought: why not give them away? And I like the fountain pen I’ve been using so much that I think I’d like someone else to try it, too. I’ve also replaced the three brushes I’ve included here, so I don’t need those, either. And a drawing for good measure.
Here are the rules! Please follow these:
- No giveaway blogs. I want more people to actually see this and have a chance at getting something; a lot of artists don’t have a lot of money…
- Reblogs enter you, and a Like helps. You can’t just like - but you can do both to double your chances of just reblogging (if it falls on someone who liked it, I’ll check to see if they reblogged it)
- I’ll be checking the blog that wins to see if you’re an active blog.
- You gotta use these after they arrive! I obviously can’t enforce this, but I want to see people not being timid! Make art! That’s what these are for. I know a thing that stops a lot of people is being scared they’ll mess up and waste expensive supplies… but if this is a gift, that shouldn’t matter!
- This ends on May 24th. If I send an ask and you don’t respond within 2 days, I’ll ask the next person, and so on.
- I will ship anywhere. I’ll pay the shipping.
I think that’s everything. Have fun!!! Good luck!
This afternoon I had the first day of a two day workshop. Expect an update on that soon! Lots of half-finished sketches and what not also lying around waiting for me to finish off too.
